 DOHA, Qatar (AP) - Haile Gebrselassie earned $1 million Wednesday by setting a world best for 10,000 meters on a road course that starts and finishes at the same spot.
The Ethiopian finished in 27 minutes, 2 seconds at the QSI road race, and received the cash prize from organizers. The old mark was 27:11 by Sammy Kipketer.
Gebrselassie is the Olympic and world champion at 10,000 and holds the distance's record on the track (26:22.75).
He used Wednesday's event to improve his speed for the 3,000 at the World Indoor Championships in March in Birmingham, England.
"This race was to help me access my fitness, and I am very pleased, though I still need more speed," he said. "I would say I was between 75 to 80 percent of the level I hope to achieve next year."
Gebrselassie won't run a marathon until after August's World Outdoor Championships. He finished third in his first attempt at 26.2 miles, April's London Marathon.

27 May 2002 - Addis Ababa - Ethiopia's former Olympic marathon champion Mamo Wolde died on Sunday after a long illness, Ethiopian state television has confirmed.

Wolde, a former army captain, was 70 years old. He became a sporting hero in Ethiopia after winning the marathon gold at the 1968 Mexico Olympics and the bronze in the 1972 Munich Games. More at

LONDON (AP) - Khalid Khannouchi (news - external web site) intends to protect his territory.

The world record-holder is not pleased by talk that distance greats Haile Gebrselassie and Paul Tergat aim to break his mark in the London Marathon on Sunday.
"It's like they're invading my event," the Moroccan-born American said Friday. "Maybe I won't say my event, but they're invading the marathon and this is the perfect time for me to step up."

LONDON - The prospect of a world record awaits, and Haile Gebrselassie will try to oblige.


The Ethiopian great runs in the London Marathon on Sunday, making his debut in an elite marathon.

He has set 15 world records on the track and won two Olympic gold medals and four world championship titles at 10,000 meters. He holds the 10,000 world record and used his blistering speed to win a world indoor title in the 1,500.

The next challenge is 26.2 miles, and the marathon mark of 2 hours, 5 minutes, 42 seconds.

"I will try to do what people expect," he said Wednesday. "It's difficult to say the time, how fast."

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - (June 3, 2001) - At the 4th Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, John Kagwe and Margaret Okayo of Kenya ran controlled races for convincing victories. Kagwe, the two-time New York City Marathon winner (1997-98), signaled his return to form, while Okayo defended her Rock 'n' Roll title by breaking her own course record.In the men's race, after a moderate opening mile of 4:56 the four pace setters and eventual champion Kagwe, separated themselves from the field and at 3 miles (14:38), the lead was about 100 meters. These five athletes stayed together reaching the 10 kilometer mark in 29:38 and the 10 mile mark in 48:03, 57 seconds ahead of the second pack. The overcast marine layer protected the runners from the sun and the mile average of 4:48 had people on the press truck speculating a finish time of sub-2:08.

The Ethiopian pacesetter Negussa Urge, after leading the race for a mile, dropped back leaving the three Kenyans, Kiprotich, Kimondiu and Kumatai, to set the pace for Kagwe. They reached the halfway point in 1:03:35, almost a minute ahead of the planned schedule and dropped out of the race leaving Kagwe to run on his own, 45 seconds ahead of the field.

Kagwe, 32, managed to maintain a sub-5 minute pace for the next few miles reaching 25K in 1:15:45. Then the toll began to tell and the pace dropped to slightly slower than 5 minutes a mile and former two-time race champion Philip Tarus, running with countryman Phillip Tanui, steadily cut into the lead. At 18 miles Tarus had dropped Tanui and was only 20 seconds behind Kagwe. At 20 miles in 1:38:11 the two were side-by-side. They ran together for the next mile and a half when Kagwe tested Tarus and with a sudden surge opened a 5 meter gap. Tarus immediately responded and appeared to be a likely winner.
